* TigerDirect now accepts bitcoin. This is a big deal because if you've ever searched for electronics on the internet, you came across one of TigerDirect's dirt-cheap deals. Shoot, even the laptop from which I'm typing this to you was bought on TigerDirect. This is kind of a big deal, you know.

* It's official because they said so: Bitcoin is now a word in the dictionary.

* Got a great idea to help improve bitcoin and/or the community? The Bitcoin Foundation wants to hear it - and fund your project.

* This will blow your socks off: A simple, in-browser app for Google Chrome that allows you to manage a bitcoin wallet! Check out the 3 minute demo below.

* Looks like you'll be able to safely and easily buy bitcoin for cash in 2014. ZipZap is starting off in the UK first, though.

* Not to sound alarmist or anything but China's prohibiting cash transfers for its three busiest days of the year. Yeah, let's just stop ATMs from spitting out cash around New Year's. Or, better yet, let's all just flock to bitcoin!

You want us in bitcoin, you need us in bitcoin
"Why do we need a 'Blacks In Bitcoin'?"

I would counter, we cannot afford not to have a Blacks In Bitcoin.

In announcing my presence to one of the most popular forces in the bitcoin community, Reddit's r/Bitcoin, I get the typical response that leads this post from someone whom I presume is in bitcoin but perhaps not black. While the bulk of my response can be found in the thread here, I believe the answer to that question requires more exploration.

Likes to live in the real world
There is a tendency in modern non-post-racial America, particularly by the dominant culture, to take umbrage when the unavoidable element of race is acknowledged in any situation. Acknowledging race and culture does not mean I'm "bringing race into" something; it's acknowledging a quite visible aspect of my person and background (and little would suspect that I'm also technically half-Latino (thanks to my Panamanian mother) just by looking at me) that has always mattered in real life, whether I wanted it to or not. I did not make this world, but I do have to live in it.

Race is a pervasive, if reluctantly discussed issue, that persists in America today. I did not start Blacks In Bitcoin to fixate on race, despite what the race-baiters and race-avoiders would love to think. That a commenter in that thread went into knee-jerk, defensive, "privileged by not being a person of color and having the option to address race at their discretion" mode proves exactly why this blog is needed.

It is no secret that the majority of early adopters of bitcoin are white and male, despite bitcoin being the leading worldwide decentralized, stateless currency. In fact, this excellent blog post by Arianna Simpson shows just how alienating a white woman can feel in trying to ingrain herself deeper into the bitcoin community. While it's optional for the majority not to mention the obvious, for me not to is silly and disingenuous, especially when we all want the same thing: greater bitcoin adoption.

Starting Blacks In Bitcoin does not threaten our greater goal - it enhances it. I cannot tell you how often I have been among my African-American peers, mentioned bitcoin, and watched their faces go blank (it happens a lot among mixed or white company as well, but not nearly as often as it does among my cohort). Despite the footer at the bottom of every page of this blog that proclaims that this is a site for everyone, people just read the name of the blog and formulate an ill-informed opinion without ever visiting the site, not too unlike those who made snap judgements about Bitcoining While Black star NFL cornerback Richard Sherman as a thug without knowing anything about him. If having a site like this encourages people who I look like/come from a similar background like me to learn, adopt, and evangelize about bitcoin, then Blacks In Bitcoin is very much needed.
BIBTC = Thug Life?

Since when did acknowledging the obvious (I'm black and in bitcoin) and encouraging others like me to educate themselves to spread the word (hence the s in Blacks In Bitcoin) become "divisive" or something that "needs to be left out" of bitcoin?

Why is it that acknowledging and embracing cultural diversity among us in order to make everyone feel included become something so controversial?

For the umpteenth time: This is, and shall always be, a place for everyone to participate. That I target perenially underserved, technologically and financially left behind communities like those with people of color, is just the avenue I use to foster inclusion of more people in the bitcoin community. That's it - it's not that deep.

So now I ask you "Why do we need Blacks In Bitcoin?" And I hope your answer is now "Because we need everyone in bitcoin."

* For whatever reason, industries like entertainment tend to be on the cutting edge of technology. So it should be no surprise that two Las Vegas casinos now accept bitcoin. While you won't be able to scan a QR code to play craps just yet, you can buy some nifty things at the gift shop or pay for you room right now. This also proves that if you ask for bitcoin, it will come!

* One day, announcements like this will be ordinary, but looks like Toronto has its first bitcoin ATM.

* For the truly paranoid, er, security conscious, ConcealBitcoin.com can show you how to hide your bitcoin wallet.dat file inside an image.

* My hometown Seattle Seahawks now accept bitcoin. As if getting to the SuperBowl weren't good enough news! #GoHawks!

Ever wondered which cities are bonkers for bitcoin? Here are some of the top ones, below.

13.  Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands)

If we're going bitcoin businesses per capita, the Canary Islands puts most other locales to shame. With over 5 businesses in Santa Cruz de Tenerife alone, you can fashion yourself a custom souvenir keychain without reaching for your wallet.

12.  Detroit, MI (USA)

For a city that needs to focus on the future, its future is now. While a few restaurants in the area accept bitcoin, you will find more crafty uses for bitcoin, like glass-blowing.

11.  San Juan, Puerto Rico (USA)

Looks like the Enchanted Isle has embraced bitcoin! Over 10 places support the cryptocurrency, including a bike shop to help you see the US territory a little more leisurely. Wanna get away?

10.  Madrid (Spain)

Of the 11 businesses dealing in bitcoin in this storied European city is a fancy vacation rental company. Anyone want to live like a modern day Hemingway for two weeks?

9.  Seoul (South Korea)

Over 10 spots to spend your bitcoin in the area, including this beauty salon. Care for some highlights paid by BTC?

8.  Barcelona (Spain)

In addition to enjoying the charms of this coastal city, spend your bitcoin in at least 14 places - and be healthy while doing it.

7.  Bratislava (Slovakia)

Ever been to Bratislava? Neither have I. But the next time I'm there, hit a few balls with your bitcoin when you aren't visiting the other 17 establishments in the city that accept BTC.

6.  Las Vegas, NV (USA)

In addition to the 19 establishments that take bitcoin, two Las Vegas casinos recently jumped into the fray. So feel free to pay bitcoin for your taxi en route to your Downtown bitcoin hotel. Hotels on the Strip: Are you paying attention?

5.  San Francisco, CA (USA)

Besides being home to Coinbase, the leading American bitcoin exchange, the Bay Area's largest city is bustling with BTC. From cupcakes to medical services, this city's 24 bit-businesses have your bitcoin needs covered.

4.  London, England (UK)

With 38 merchants accepting bitcoin in the city alone, the seat of the United Kingdom is one to watch for bitcoin expansion. The bankers in the City cannot be too far behind. Massage, anyone?

3.  Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Hotel Prodeo
We've all heard of the currency control crisis in Argentina. It's no wonder its citizens are embracing bitcoin, with over 43 BTC-friendly businesses in the capital city. Time for you to visit in style.

2.  New York, NY (USA)

EVR NYC
Brimming with over 49 businesses to patronize, the nation's financial center has something for everyone. Law firm, acupuncture, to pedestrian uses like just getting drinks, NYC is your exotic destination for your BTC.

1.  Vancouver, BC (Canada)

World's first two-way bitcoin ATM at Waves Coffee

As the first to feature a bitcoin ATM, Vancouver gets the nod. This diverse, cosmopolitan city boasts a whopping 44 businesses who traffic in bitcoin. Would you like a latte with that bitcoin, eh?

For those wanting a simple, plug and play, super-secure bitcoin wallet, looks like the wait is almost over! To boot, they're adding a secure web wallet for Trezor users as well.

* Have you seen our recent addition to Bitcoining While Black, Richard Sherman? Less than 72 hours after we feted him, "the best cornerback" in the NFL became the talk of Twitter for his post-game bravado. Here's a long-read about the humble beginnings that begot an intelligent, unstoppable confidence.
Pay for your tuition in BTC

* Wall Street Journal's "Moneybeat" blog shows the variety of things/experiences you can buy with bitcoin. Only mentionable because, for a change, the finance sector-friendly paper isn't bashing BTC and all its possibilities.

* The U.S. courts basically killed net neutrality, effectively giving big Internet companies the right to cut deals with big media companies to throttle the Internet to their advantage through pricing and access. Just check out these Reddit comments to get a picture of a future of companies picking Internet winners and losers. Very sad. Hope there are more appeals left to straighten this out.

*Further adding to my sadness as a Seattle Supersonics fan, the Sacramento Kings become the first pro sports team to accept bitcoin. Now I've got more reasons to care about them besides former UW stud Isaiah Thomas (can you tell I'm from Seattle??).

*Oh look: Apple's longstanding bitcoin hatin' is because they want all the money for themselves. I'm sure nobody saw this coming...

* Not sure what they're doing over there at Circle, but they're certainly winning the executive arms race before their release as some sort of bitcoin financial services company.

* I will be on Al Jazeera English's "The Stream" today from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM Pacific Time, talking bitcoin. The show's not available in the U.S. but you can watch online if you have a VPN via stream.aljazeera.com.

* Stopped by Coinmarketcap.com today for the first time in a while. The altcoin market is getting weirder and weirder (RonPaulCoin, throw it up!)...

* Overstock.com's certainly shaken up the retail world with its recent acceptance of bitcoin as a payment option. In fact, the Overstock.com CEO is calling out Amazon. This writer thinks Walmart would be wise to be next, while Business Insider shows a breakdown of Overstock.com's sales via heat map below:
