As some of you may know, I've played poker seriously for the last four years. Being stuck in an online poker unfriendly country like the United States, our options for sites are limited. With the promise of a stateless, decentralized, digital currency like bitcoin, this barrier can be overcome by a polished site like Betcoin, currently a member of the Winning Poker Network (WPN).

WHO ARE THEY?

Betcoin runs a fully functional casino, sportsbook, and poker operation. While I don't mess with games of chance like casino games and sports-betting, I have been playing on their poker network partners at WPN for over a year. Using the exact same software as you will find on an America's Cardroom, Betcoin's poker room offers many of the features you would expect of a top-notch online poker site.

GAMEPLAY

One thought strikes you when you first play a hand on Betcoin's software: My God, that action is smooth. While nothing may top the decade-proven efficiency of the PokerStars platform, Betcoin's software is as slick as you'll find on a US-facing poker site. Hands are dealt quick, pot amounts are clearly denoted, and there are a multitude of features you would normally expect of a professional poker site, including player notes, granular control of sound effects (notifications only, please!), and four-color decks.

Also on Betcoin, you enjoy the liquidity of the WPN player pool. Not only does The Winning Poker Network rank in the top 25 of player traffic (dwarfing every other bitcoin-only site), but also you are back playing with the rest of the world, instead of these restrictive intrastate, ringfenced operations; there is room for growth.

Primarily a tournament grinder, I appreciate having access to the improving tournament schedule of the WPN with my bitcoin, with a variety of game types, formats, and structures. And yes, there are plenty of VIP/rakeback levels to attain for you volume players out there.

The Cons: As a member of the Winning Poker Network using their software platform, Betcoin is constrained by similar software issues found throughout the network. One of the biggest, in my estimation, is the inability to check mucked showdown hands. Information is power, and poker is a game of incomplete information. Lacking an essential piece of info when checking your hand histories versus your opponents is a glaring oversight I am confused about why WPN will not fix.

Lately, the network's stability has come under attack, with several fits of DDoS attacks hampering tournament series, Sundays, and other big traffic times (again, this is the network's fault, not necessarily Betcoin's).

Although my heads-up display (HUD) PokerTracker4 works on other Winning Poker Network sites, it doesn't work at all on Betcoin, being able to track my hands but not show the HUD on my open tables. For the multi-tabler like myself, this is a huge deterrent.

COMMUNITY

One the most underrated aspects of Betcoin is the community of players it has built. With a scrolling Player Chat on the community page alongside the latest news/corporate shillages, er, messages, Betcoin definitely looks out for, and celebrates with, their own. Most notable was its recent 10 BTC Anti-Collusion Freeroll, where management rewarded the community watch nature of its players having outed some unsavory activity with a giveaway tournament open to all Betcoiners.

RACKING UP

All in all, Betcoin is as pleasant a poker experience as you're going to find for your bitcoin at the moment. While a HUD monkey like myself may limit my exposure to the site until there's a PT4 fix, Betcoin offers far better graphics than Seals, nearly the liquidity of Merge, and the unmatched cashout speed of the blockchain.

Excellent question - and the purpose of this site.

I'm featured in this article from the esteemed The Atlantic, which endeavors to find out why.

“Can you imagine what it would have been like to own a piece of email technology in 1994?” asks Jackson, who believes the currency is still very much in its early adoption phase. “That’s what Bitcoin is like right now, and it’s only getting bigger.”

The Case for Bitcoin at the World Series of Poker

Won't fit a suitcase, will fit a BTC wallet (photo: Joe Giron/WSOP)
Each year at this time, thousands of poker enthusiasts descend upon the Las Vegas Valley  to participate in the storied World Series of Poker (WSOP), often bringing with them untold sums of cash in order to participate. The buy-ins to these events scale up from the $500 Casino Employees Event to the uber-high roller $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop. Even just for the limitless cash games running alongside the WSOP, the cash on hand with players boggles the mind.

So it comes as little surprise that reports came on the first day of the Series that players at the Rio have had their hotel rooms robbed of cash and valuables. While hotel theft of valuables is an issue across the hospitality industry, the loss of large sums of cash can be directly avoided by poker players at the Series if the WSOP high command would do one, little thing...

Adopt bitcoin.

Naturally, as the founder of Blacks In Bitcoin, I am going to be biased. However, as a poker player, I am always astounded by how much cash changes hands at large poker festivals such as the WSOP. While our bankrolls depend upon larger than average walking around amounts of cash, bitcoin is a simple, elegant solution to poker players becoming walking, international traveling targets for theft and robbery.

Caesars Entertainment! Allow me to enumerate the benefits of accepting bitcoin at the cage:

- Digital, quick transactions of large sums of cash in the same amount of time it would take to count it out for the cameras, if not quicker.

- Meet my friends Coinbase and Bitpay. They have an excellent track record in helping large businesses accept bitcoin transactions and instantaneously convert them into the currency of their choice, eliminating any bitcoin price volatility risk.

- Potentially more international player participation as the traveler will no longer be burdened by additional customs and banking hassles due to traveling with large sums of cash.

- Heightened player safety, as they are no longer walking targets.

Players! It is my pleasure to remind you of the convenience of using bitcoin at the cage:

- I repeat: No more walking targets.

- Getting your money in and out of the country in a form other than cash is now cheaper
and easier than ever (even cheaper than an "out of ATM network" withdrawal or traveler's cheques).

It's like a bank in your hands (photo: Wikimedia Commons)
- You can access your bitcoin wallet on that smartphone you keep checking between the glacial pace of live poker hands. And if you ever lose that phone or it gets stolen, you can just go to any Internet connected computer to check on your bitcoin wallet and move the funds to another wallet if you would like. If you lose cash or have it stolen...it gone.

- Increased peace of mind that your money is safe while you play.

I am sure the poobahs at Caesars and WSOP would have to run this up the flagpole with the ever-present Nevada Gaming Control Board for approval. However, with so much infrastructure continuing to be built around "the Internet of money," bitcoin is not a fad - it's big business. I see no reason why bitcoin shouldn't be a viable option by next year's World Series.

Test it out at a few WSOPC (Circuit) stops over the next year to work out the kinks. Because if you won't bitcoin, I am sure the eagle eyes of the poker landscape from the European Poker Tour to the World Poker Tour and beyond, will bitcoin.

Today I restarted the Bitcoin Paranoid app on my Android (of course: Apple fears what it cannot control) phone. Why should this matter to you? Because IT'S HAPPENING!!

After all this time, it looks like The Bitcoin is about to start The Rally - and I don't want to miss a single, breathless, exciting moment of it. Remarkably resilient (and dormant) these last few months while we've seen the demise of Mt. Gox and several bitcoin community related scandals/disappointments, bitcoin looks ready to grow into its worldwide fascination.
But, but, bitcoin has already had its moment! Yes and no.

The first time, when the notoriety around bitcoin was largely tied to its highly volatile price, bitcoin was seen more for the spectacular short-term gains of this curious little cryptocurrency and less for the technology underneath it. Like a comet, it shot past our consciousness and out of relative view once it cooled off in the $430-$500, where it has remained for the past few months.
This funding round sponsored by Dr. Evil

But no longer. It. Is. HAPPENING.

What will make this rise different? How about $60 meeeellion dollars worth of bitcoin company investments, including funding rounds by Bitpay, Coinbase, and Circle?

And let's talk Circle for a second. With the unveiling of what their hush-hush enterprise is about - with no less than a free $10 worth of bitcoin in your invite-only account - Circle aims to make bitcoin dead simple for the masses. If there's been a barrier to entry for mass bitcoin adoption, it hasn't been awareness but its complexity. The more button clicks  it takes to secure your bitcoin or even acquire it, the more people are turned off. Companies like Circle aim to solve that issue before they've even started.

The infrastructure around bitcoin this time around is more suited for sustainability. We have exchanges coming or already online; huge retailers that accept bitcoin like Overstock.com; and even the threat/promise of huge e-tailer/financial juggernaut eBay/Paypal taking a long, hard stare at adopting bitcoin. It. Is. HAPPENING.

Obviously, I am not a financial adviser of any sort. However, I can read the writing on the bitwall: It's time to get back in there. Get your BTC while it is cheap now. Because buying bitcoin is buying a piece of the future - a future that everyone everywhere can own.

China, it's not me, it's YOU (image: Irismightlikepink)
* Anyone else sick of China yet? I know I am. They're worse than that flake you tried to date in undergrad: Do you like us or not already?!? First bitcoin is banned, then it isn't. At this point, we really don't care - and wish the exchanges would stop (over)reacting to every little vacillation of the Chinese government. Your food and Wall is great, China, but we're just not that into you anymore.

* Please be real: A bitcoin-fueled debit card said to work with 90% of US ATMs? Just what we need to get the bitcoin millionaires to goose liquidity in the bitcoin economy.

Fiat: You now have my permission...to die
* An investor group wants to buy the tarnished Mt. Gox exchange for a symbolic 1 BTC. I'm not even sure "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

* Just a personal note here: With bitcoin hovering in the $400 price range, I'm all over this buying opportunity. If you believe in the long-term prospects of bitcoin, even just as a payment processing protocol, you should be, too (in my non-investment grade, unqualified opinion). We're just four months into 2014 and we've already seen tens of millions of investment dollars poured into bitcoin companies to make the cryptocurrency more accessible. As a wise man once said, "Now is not the time for fear..."

* Finally, the general public does what I've been saying to do for months: Ignore Mt. Gox. After their PR meltdown last weekend in halting all withdrawals, it's time to ring the death knell for the one-time bitcoin exchange bellwether turned blight on the industry.
It's been real, Mt. Gox...

* More knocks on Gox: The Washington Post takes a swing at the much maligned bitcoin exchange, and why its demise is a good thing for bitcoin.

* New York is preparing to move forward with issuing "BitLicenses" for bitcoin-based businesses. The degree of regulation is yet to be seen, although this is a step toward legitimizing bitcoin in government's eyes.

* Very small but still significant as bitcoin gets (sigh - yet another unfavorable) mentioned in the second episode of the hottest show on "TV," Netflix's "House of Cards."

* TigerDirect now accepts bitcoin. This is a big deal because if you've ever searched for electronics on the internet, you came across one of TigerDirect's dirt-cheap deals. Shoot, even the laptop from which I'm typing this to you was bought on TigerDirect. This is kind of a big deal, you know.

* It's official because they said so: Bitcoin is now a word in the dictionary.

* Got a great idea to help improve bitcoin and/or the community? The Bitcoin Foundation wants to hear it - and fund your project.

* This will blow your socks off: A simple, in-browser app for Google Chrome that allows you to manage a bitcoin wallet! Check out the 3 minute demo below.

* Looks like you'll be able to safely and easily buy bitcoin for cash in 2014. ZipZap is starting off in the UK first, though.

* Not to sound alarmist or anything but China's prohibiting cash transfers for its three busiest days of the year. Yeah, let's just stop ATMs from spitting out cash around New Year's. Or, better yet, let's all just flock to bitcoin!

"Why do we need a 'Blacks In Bitcoin'?"

I would counter, we cannot afford not to have a Blacks In Bitcoin.

In announcing my presence to one of the most popular forces in the bitcoin community, Reddit's r/Bitcoin, I get the typical response that leads this post from someone whom I presume is in bitcoin but perhaps not black. While the bulk of my response can be found in the thread here, I believe the answer to that question requires more exploration.

Likes to live in the real world
There is a tendency in modern non-post-racial America, particularly by the dominant culture, to take umbrage when the unavoidable element of race is acknowledged in any situation. Acknowledging race and culture does not mean I'm "bringing race into" something; it's acknowledging a quite visible aspect of my person and background (and little would suspect that I'm also technically half-Latino (thanks to my Panamanian mother) just by looking at me) that has always mattered in real life, whether I wanted it to or not. I did not make this world, but I do have to live in it.

Race is a pervasive, if reluctantly discussed issue, that persists in America today. I did not start Blacks In Bitcoin to fixate on race, despite what the race-baiters and race-avoiders would love to think. That a commenter in that thread went into knee-jerk, defensive, "privileged by not being a person of color and having the option to address race at their discretion" mode proves exactly why this blog is needed.

It is no secret that the majority of early adopters of bitcoin are white and male, despite bitcoin being the leading worldwide decentralized, stateless currency. In fact, this excellent blog post by Arianna Simpson shows just how alienating a white woman can feel in trying to ingrain herself deeper into the bitcoin community. While it's optional for the majority not to mention the obvious, for me not to is silly and disingenuous, especially when we all want the same thing: greater bitcoin adoption.

Starting Blacks In Bitcoin does not threaten our greater goal - it enhances it. I cannot tell you how often I have been among my African-American peers, mentioned bitcoin, and watched their faces go blank (it happens a lot among mixed or white company as well, but not nearly as often as it does among my cohort). Despite the footer at the bottom of every page of this blog that proclaims that this is a site for everyone, people just read the name of the blog and formulate an ill-informed opinion without ever visiting the site, not too unlike those who made snap judgements about Bitcoining While Black star NFL cornerback Richard Sherman as a thug without knowing anything about him. If having a site like this encourages people who I look like/come from a similar background like me to learn, adopt, and evangelize about bitcoin, then Blacks In Bitcoin is very much needed.
BIBTC = Thug Life?

Since when did acknowledging the obvious (I'm black and in bitcoin) and encouraging others like me to educate themselves to spread the word (hence the s in Blacks In Bitcoin) become "divisive" or something that "needs to be left out" of bitcoin?

Why is it that acknowledging and embracing cultural diversity among us in order to make everyone feel included become something so controversial?

For the umpteenth time: This is, and shall always be, a place for everyone to participate. That I target perenially underserved, technologically and financially left behind communities like those with people of color, is just the avenue I use to foster inclusion of more people in the bitcoin community. That's it - it's not that deep.

So now I ask you "Why do we need Blacks In Bitcoin?" And I hope your answer is now "Because we need everyone in bitcoin."
